Ethiopia’s triumph, preserved for every reader and researcher.
About us
The Memorial keeps the history in active use: as a library, an archive, and a place to study.
The Battle of Adwa remains one of the most significant victories of an African nation over a European colonial power. Under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, Ethiopian forces decisively defeated the Italian army, securing Ethiopia’s sovereignty and inspiring anti-colonial movements across Africa and the wider world.
Understanding a victory of that scale takes more than a monument. It takes sources, scholarship, and somewhere to read them — which is what the Memorial’s library and archive exist to provide.

Year of the victory
We preserve and promote the historical significance of the Battle of Adwa, and we make the record of it usable — by students, historians, and anyone who walks through the door.
In practice that means two things. We run a cataloged library that members can borrow from, covering Ethiopian history, the anti-colonial struggle, and African heritage. And we publish the Memorial’s own research archive — journals, theses, and papers — free for anyone to read and download.
